Over time, photos are susceptible to damage from many causes:- sun-bleaching, liquid damage, creasing or scratching among others. Much of this damage is repairable, allowing the recovery of the original image. This can be seen in the following image of a friend's father with some guests on their farm. You will see that there is a water stain along with scratches, specks of dirt and fading on the edges. However, the water mark was the main area to work on. Move your mouse over the image to see the final result. You can see how the damage is no longer visible, but the 'aged' character of the image is retained with a bit more contrast to bring out the features of the people in the photo:
